Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Frank Herbert, Dune. New York: Ace Books, 1967. Signed by Herbert with an inscription to Frank Lloyd Wright apprentice, John Ottenheimer. . Publisher s pictorial wrappers featuring the iconic John Schoenherr artwork. 541 pages. Original cover price of .95 cents. . Very nice paperback edition of one of the best selling science fiction books of all time! Second overall printing proceeding the N-3. More importantly this copy belonged to John Ottenheimer, a well respected friend, apprentice and later an employee for 11 years of Frank Lloyd Wright. The Inscription, which was written on the book one page as the reader is about to enter the world of Dune reads, For John Ottenheimer, this is not Taliesin, Frank Herbert. Taliesin was the estate that Frank Lloyd Wright built which was an 800 acre compound with his home, a school and his studio! It was also the name of Frank Lloyd Wright s architectural firm where Ottenheimer was employed for 11 years after completing a 5 year apprenticeship! An incredible association and a neat inscription!! Good overall condition showing wear, rubbing, creasing on spine. Scuffing and tearing to bottom spine. Clean internally save author s hand. Trace foxing to pages. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. First edition, first printing. This is a notably clean signed first edition, first printing, in the first state dust jacket, housed in a custom Solander case. Condition is near fine. Herbert characteristically signed in black ink on the title page, crossing out his printed name and signing above, and at an angle consonant with, the slope of the stylized sand dune. First edition is so stated on the copyright page and first printing confirmed by copyright page content. The first issue dust jacket is confirmed by an intact "5.95" front flap price and the publisher information in four lines on the lower rear flap. The blue cloth binding is square and clean with sharp corners, no color shift, and bright white spine print. There is no appreciable wear and only trivial wrinkling to the spine ends. The contents remain bright with a crisp feel. We find no spotting, age-toning, or previous ownership marks other than the author's signature. Slight soiling does not significantly mar the otherwise white page edges. The illustrated dust jacket is clean and complete apart from fractional wear at the spine ends with trivial wear otherwise confined to the corners and front hinge. Color shift to the jacket spine is barely detectable, retaining clearly yellow color in the author's printed name and strong color in the wraparound illustration. The rear face map of Arrakis is unsoiled. The dust jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival cover. The book is protected within a full tan-orange Morocco goatskin Solander. The Solander features twin blue Morocco spine labels, raised and gilt-framed spine bands, gilt-framed border rules on each cover, and a marbled paper lining. The Morocco and marbled paper hues were chosen to evoke the hues of Arrakis desert, Spice, and Fremen eyes. Condition of the Solander is pristine.More than half a century after it was published, Dune continues to be regarded among the greatest science fiction novels. The road to appreciation of Herbert's work was through a proverbial desert. Dune was long, complex, strange, and unprecedented and predictably rejected by more than 20 publishing houses before being improbably accepted by Chilton, a Philadelphia operation known for auto repair manuals and hobby magazines. Many writers take an odd, tortuous path to literary greatness. Frank Patrick Herbert, Jr. (1920-1986) proved the rule. Herbert had worked as a writer for more than two decades before Dune, but was "chronically broke" and had, at turns, tried his luck as a journalist, war photographer, and even as a Congressional speech writer. 1959 found a 40-year-old Herbert on the sand dunes near Florence, Oregon, researching a story about a U.S. Department of Agriculture program to stabilize the shifting sands. The Oregon dunes proved fertile ground for creative epiphany. "Herbert was a quintessential product of the libertarian culture of the Pacific coast, self-reliant and distrustful of centralized authority, yet with a mile-wide streak of utopian futurism and a concomitant willingness to experiment." Herbert's research into dunes became research into deserts and desert cultures, thence two short, serialized novels that he then re-worked into the single, giant epic that became Dune.Dune is speculative fiction in the fullest sense. In Dune, Herbert created a reality at once compellingly foreign and provocatively familiar in philosophical, political, and cultural strictures tightly woven by Herbert and then cathartically disrupted. Herbert populated this reality with characters personal enough for the reader to identify and invest, yet potent enough to serve as allegory. Dune was revolutionary, even within the genre. Classic science fiction elements of galactic empire and faster than light space travel interleave with Homeric tragedy, biblical exile, suffering, and revelation, mystic states of altered consciousness, ecological sustainability as an ethos, and socio-political tensions between order and anarchy, revolution and reconciliation. An unqualified critical success, Dune won both the 1965 Nebula and 1966 Hugo awards for best novel. Commercial success was slower, but the fan cult grew during the 1970s and Dune became a lucrative franchise, with a series of sequels authored by Herbert, followed by more than a dozen additional Dune novels authored by Herbert's son after his death.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Frank Herbert (1965 76) 'Dune' trilogy, US first editions, first printings, published by Chilton Company ('Dune') and Putnam ('Dune Messiah'; and 'Children of Dune'). Each volume is signed by author Frank Herbert. The trilogy set consists of: 1) 'Dune' (1965), published by Chilton Company. Signed on the title page without personaliasation. Condition of 'Dune': a fine copy in a near fine and correct first state dust jacket. There are no previous owners' scribbles inside the book, no bookplates, no stamps of any sorts. Internally clean and unread. The lettering on the spine is vibrant and not rubbed out. The original blue cloth boards are vibrant in colour and clean throughout clean as in spotless. No foxing. The dust jacket is the correct first state specimen with the correct USD 5.95 price and the four line Chilton address on the bottom of the rear flap as called for. NOT restored. NOT colour faded on the spine. Very slight edge wear to the spine tip folds as shows. As dust jacket examples of this title go this is in as good as it gets condition. 2) 'Dune Messiah' (1969), published by G.P. Putnam's Sons. Signed on the title page without personaliasation. Condition of 'Dune Messiah': a near fine copy in near fine dust jacket. No previous owners' scribbles, no names, no bookplates, no stamps. A triffle of rubbing at the bottom edge of the board probably from sliding in and out of a shelf. Minuscule squash to top rear spine. Dust jacket is NOT pri clipped showing the USD 4.95 price as called for. Near fine with no tears and just a little bit of rubbing to edges as shown. 3) 'Children of Dune' (1976), published by G.P. Putnam's Sons. Signed and inscribed by Herbert of the ffep: "To andi Frank Herbert". Condition of 'Children of Dune': a fine copy without previous owners' scribbles, no bookplates, no stamps. Bookseller prices in pencil (can be erased) on ffep. Clean throughout. near fine dust jacketfor the harshest of judges showing the correct USD 8.95 price. NOT faded on the spine as often seen. Tiny creases on edges of jacket's spine. The publication history of 'Dune' has become legend. After researching sand dunes in Oregon Herbert conceived the idea to write the story. The novel was first serialised in ANALOG magazine from Decmber 1963 onwards as 'Dune World' and 'Prophet of Dune'. After 23 rejections by established publishers, Chilton Company, a car repair manual printing company, published the novel in October 1965. The print run was very low and about half of the initial run had to be discarded. Very few copies have survived in decent condition. Very rare to find the complete trilogy signed and in this outstanding condition. Dune remains the best science fiction novel of all time. It won the 1966 Hugo and Nebula Award. It has been described as the science fiction equivalent to Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings' in fantasy in the book's scope, depth, complexity and quality of writing. It has had a colossal influence on the sci-fi genre in literature and film. For exmaple, without 'Dune' 'Star Wars' would not have been made. 'Dune' has been adaped into film by David Lynch in 1984; and as a TV-mini series in 2000. An earlier attempt to film the source material by Alejandro Jodorowsky in the 1970s failed due to lack of finances. A star cast (Salvador Dali; Orson Welles) and the most creative team of that time (film score by Pink Floyd; conceptual art by H.R Giger; Jean Giraud and Chris Foss) had been working on the project and it became 'the most influential film that was never made'. A new film adaptation by Canadian director Dennis Villeneuve who has made some outstanding science fiction films in the past ('Arrival' and 'Blade Runner 2049') was released in 2021, and early 2024 in two parts to universal acclaim. We have more images upon request. Abebooks allows only five images to be uploaded. First and Fine. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. First Edition 6th Printing - Dune is a 1965 epic science fiction novel by American author Frank Herbert, originally published as two separate serials (1963 64 novel Dune World and 1965 novel Prophet of Dune) in Analog magazine. It tied with Roger Zelazny's This Immortal for the Hugo Award for Best Novel and won the inaugural Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1966. It is the first installment of the Dune Chronicles. It is one of the world's best-selling science fiction novels. Dune is set in the distant future in a feudal interstellar society, descended from terrestrial humans, in which various noble houses control planetary fiefs. It tells the story of young Paul Atreides, whose family reluctantly accepts the stewardship of the planet Arrakis. While the planet is an inhospitable and sparsely populated desert wasteland, it is the only source of melange or "spice", an enormously valuable drug that extends life and enhances mental abilities. Melange is also necessary for space navigation, which requires a kind of multidimensional awareness and foresight that only the drug provides. As melange can only be produced on Arrakis, control of the planet is a coveted and dangerous undertaking. The story explores the multilayered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion as the factions of the empire confront each other in a struggle for the control of Arrakis and its spice.

First edition, first issue of DJ with $5.95 on front flap and four lines of publisher information on back flap. xxvi, 412, [1] pp. With the two-page map of Arrakis. 1 vols. 8vo. Originally published as in serial form in Analog magazine, it was later accepted by Sterling Lanier at Chilton, a publisher of auto repair manuals, and released at the very high price of $5.95. Because of this, the first printing did not sell well, but it slowly gained critical praise, including a letter from Arthur C. Clarke to Lanier that read: "Dune seems to me unique among modern science fiction novels in the depth of its characterization and the extraordinary detail of the world it creates. I know nothing comparable to it in science fiction or fantasy except The Lord of the Rings." It tied for the 1966 Hugo Award, and was the inaugural winner of the Nebula Award for Best Novel. It is widely considered the best-selling science fiction book of all time, and is one of the earliest examples of climate fiction, popularizing the term "ecology" Currey, p.238; Pringle: Science Fiction: The 100 Best Books #48 Blue cloth, stamped in white on spine.
