Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. First Edition. This is a first edition of Scribner's Treasure Island with 17 gorgeous illustrations by N.C. Wyeth, in the first of many commissions that would come from Scribner's in the ensuing years. The illustrations - cover, title page, endpapers, and 14 plates with onion skin covers - are all present and firmly attached to the binding. The is the first state variant with the mistaken "23" instead of "123" on the table of contents page x for chapter XVI. Top edge gilt. First printing is noted by the lack of later printing notifications on the copyright page. Jacket is missing. The cover pastedown illustration has many scratches and scrapes. The spine is cocked and a bit sun faded and the spine ends are worn. There is wear to the board edges and the board corners are bumped. Previous owner bookmark applied with enough glue to warp the front free endpaper, and a Christmas 1916 gift inscription to the previous owner. Several pages have somewhere between "cracked" and "starting" weakness in the binding, particularly towards the front. There are no loose gatherings or loose pages, but this book was read repeatedly and hard. Related - several pages have smudging, presumably from dirty fingers of children eagerly thumbing the pages. The onion skin cover for the illustration page 76 has a small (1 inch x 1/4 inch) pull-away section stuck to page 76 near the spine towards the top and opposite page 112 the onion skin has an elliptical opening about 2 inches long and 1/4 inch wide. Page 49 has a wide torn-off top corner, and a smaller top corner is missing from page 217. Stains - top near spine pp. 245-end, what looks like drips of coffee pp. 106-112, also a stain to bottom mid-front edge pp. dedication-contents.There are other, smaller, problems - a few poorly opened and ragged page edges, a dot of soiling that penetrates a few pages, an errant page of foxing towards the back, etc. It would be impossible to comprehensively detail every cosmetic flaw on this copy. Buyers with specific questions are encouraged to ask questions, but this copy is sold waf (with all faults). With all that said, it still has a presence and retains some of it's charm.
