Condition: Very good plus. First US edition of Austen's first novel in a stunning fine art binding by the acclaimed Argentinian design bookbinder Sol Rébora. Austen's first novel uses the love stories of two sisters to explore the complexities and contradictions in the gendered expectations of the Regency era: a woman will be praised for her capacity to feel emotion (her sensibility), but not too much; a woman will be praised for her independent and responsible nature (her sense), but not too much. First published in late 1811 in three volumes, this is the first edition to appear in the United States, published in two volumes by Carey & Lea in an edition of only 1250 copies. Sol Rébora is an internationally recognized design bookbinder based in Buenos Aires. Her works embody a minimalistic elegance that is nevertheless subtly complex, as in the carefully structured multiple layers used here. They are not only visually stunning, but supremely tactile. From Rèbora's artist statement: "The cloth texture is achieved using silk with a patterned design that evokes the aesthetic of the time period in which the original edition was produced, creating a visual connection with antique paper. This design also appeals to the collective memory of how custom bindings from the early 19th century might have appeared, complete with deep-relief hot-stamping impressions." A magnificent, unique copy of an Austen first. Two 12mo volumes, 6.75'' x 4.25'' each. Modern full grey-pink design binding by Sol Rébora in Can Can structure with one layer of cotton cloth and two layers of Japanese paper, each element hand-painted with acrylics and textured with a patterned design impressed with deep-relief hot-stamping from silk; spines and boards stamped in dark grey. Cotton and abaca handmade paper grey-pink endpapers. 199, [1]; 189, [1] pages. Light pencil notation to fly leaf of Vol. I. Some offsetting marks to endpapers from earlier binding, archival paper repair to fly leaf; light browning to leaves, some staining. Solid.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. London: Richard Bentley, 1833. COLLECTED EDITION. Five volumes, octavo (160 x 100 mm) An attractive set, no half titles, engraved frontispiece in each volume. Bound in publishers contemporary polished tan calf, covers gilt ruled; rebacked, preserving most of the original double labels, with marbled end papers, with the spines fully gilt S&S and P&P have an ex-libris bookplate, P&P has some news cuttings attached to the final blank. Emma has a stain on the frontis and title page possibly caused by the leaving an insert. Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey also have an ex-libris. Contents are clean, no paper tear, tears or loss. The calf bindings have some marks, the end papers are whole. The Bentley editions of Austen's novels were issued both separately, and afterwards collectively with a substituted title page reading "The Novels by Miss Jane Austen. Complete in Five volumes". Gilson cites contemporary notes in the Athenaeum implying publication of the separate issue of Mansfield Park in April 1833 and the collective issue from October 1833. Copies from the collective issue are much less commonly encountered than those of the separate issues, Gilson calling them "very rare in any state". Issued by Bentley beginning in 1833, this one with the frontis and all five printed title-pages dated 1833, but with the part-title at p. [213] of the last volume, for Persuasion, dated 1851. Sadleir writes it may be of interest to note that Bentley advertised this Collected Edition in the Athenaeum of October 1833, as . as neatly bound for the library so as to range with the Scott s novels, Miss Edgeworth s novels, Byron s work , etc price 30s. - see Sadleir X1X Century p105. I have a set of Edgeworth in the same calf and the spines have the same gilt design, there is also an identical set with spine decorations, and calf boards, of Walter Scott s for sale elsewhere. The present set is therefore one of the Austen rare publishers neatly bound library sets. A very similar set owned by Charlton Heston sold at Bonhams in March 2016 and was also sold without the printed half titles and engraved titles. WorldCat states three copies.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: very good +. Limited Edition. Large octavo, 5 volumes, complete as published (two volumes of Austen's letters were issued nearly a decade later, and are sometimes offered together with this set). One of 1,000 limited sets, 950 of which were offered for sale. An exceptionally beautiful example of this notoriously fragile set, bound in the publisher's marbled boards with blue-ish cloth spines and printed spine labels; evocative of a Regency-period publisher's binding. Spines gently and evenly sunned, but a fine set, with handsome 20th century bookplates to each front paste-down. In the rare original dust jackets, somewhat darkened on the spines, and some with small stains and edge chips, but still at least very good. Aside form the many sets which were quickly bound up in leather, one surmises that surviving sets in the publisher's binding often had their jackets thrown away, as the bindings are more attractive. Each volume contains a bound-in replacement spine label at the rear, as issed. A superior, un-fooled-around-with example.

    H. G. Clarke and Co. London. 1844. First edition thus. In two volumes. 12mo. 13.5 x 9.5cm. Handsomely bound in full morocco, with decorative panels tooled in gilt and in blind to both upper and lower boards of each volume. Gilt decorations to compartments of spine, all page edges gilt. Bound in - to both volumes, before the title pages, are the gilt and coloured decorated portion of the earliest Jane Austen wrappers, (though the concept was more like gift wrap than modern-day dust wrappers). See below for details on these fledgling dust wrappers that usually were used for annuals and other gift volumes. Very few of these have ever been available to see, let alone own. Sense and Sensibility was Austen's first book, originally published in 1811.Volume I is slightly rubbed to extremities, has an ownership inscription dated 1847. 239 pages, rear free endpaper is loose. Volume II is slightly more rubbed to spine and to extremities, head of spine is frayed. It has the same ownership inscription. 224 pages with one gathering comprising of pages 193-208 is partially loose and stands proud of the main body of text. Generally a very clean and sound set. EXCEPTIONALLY SCARCE. FROM WIKIPEDIA. The oldest publishers' dust jacket now on record was issued in 1829 on an English annual, Friendship's Offering for 1830. It was discovered at the Bodleian Library in Oxford by Michael Turner, a former curator and Head of Conservation at the Library. Its existence was announced by Oxford in 2009. It is three years older than the previous oldest known jacket, which was discovered in 1934 by the English bookman John Carter on another English annual, The Keepsake for 1833 (issued in 1832). Both jackets are of the type that completely enclosed the books. Most jackets of this type were torn when they were opened and then discarded like gift-wrapping paper; they were not designed to be reused, and surviving examples are known on only a handful of titles. The scarcity of jackets of this type, together with the lack of written documentation from publishers of the period, makes it very hard to determine how widely these all-enclosing jackets were used during the period from 1820 to 1850, but they were likely common on ornately bound annuals and on some trade books.

A very good copy of the first edition of Sense and Sensibility with Chris Hammond illustrations, in the original decorative cloth binding. All page edges gilted. The original endpapers have been retained with professional repair at the joints. There is light marking around the joints at the rear endpaper. The contents are complete, sound and very clean, with light toning towards the page edges. There is some light freckling to the top part of the verso of the final page, the final blank and the recto of the rear free endpaper. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.
