First edition, first issue of the most famous of the Sherlock Holmes tales. First issue with 'you' for 'your' on line 3 of page 13. Octavo, original black and gilt stamped pictorial red cloth, illustrated with 16 plates by Sidney Paget. In very good condition, inscription to the front pastedown. Although Conan Doyle killed off his most famous character by sending Holmes over the Reichenbach Falls in a struggle with Professor Moriarty in âThe Final Problemâ (December 1893), readers demanded the sleuthâs return. The author obliged with this, the thirdâ" and still considered by many the bestâ" Sherlock Holmes novel, carefully positioned on the title page as âanother adventureâ of Holmes. âBut,â as Howard Haycraft notes, âthe seed of doubt was plantedâ; while the novel proved an immediate success, readers pressed for more. Conan Doyle finally relented and engineered Holmesâ âresurrectionâ in 1903. The Hound of the Baskervilles remains âone of the most gripping books in the languageâ (Crime & Mystery 100 Best). âThe supernatural is handled with great effect and no letdown. The plot and subplots are thoroughly integrated and the false clues put in and removed with a master hand. The criminal is superb⦠and the secondary figures each contribute to the total effect of brilliancy and grandeur combined. One wishes one could be reading it for the first timeâ (Barzun & Taylor 1142).

A fantastic 1965 edition of The Hound of Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle! ?Never in the delirious dream of a disordered brain could anything more savage, more appalling, more hellish be conceived than that savage face which broke upon us out of the fog? The Hound of Baskervilles according to an official of the Criminal Investigation Department is ?not only the best Sherlock Holmes long story, it is one of the best of all crime novels.? It certaintly holds the reader in suspense as few murder stories do. Its combination of horror, homicidal villainy, the fogs of remote Dartmoor, the Baskerville Curse ?a great black beast shaped like a hound?, are unforgettable and Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are at their best! Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Used; Good. The Hound of the Baskervilles was first published in Strand magazine in 1902 and it still remains one of the best of all crime novels. It truly holds the reader in suspense in a way that most novels are unable achieve. Read on as Watson describs the situation to Holmes - ?Within the last few months it became increasingly plain to me that Sir Charles?s nervous system was strained to the breaking point. He had taken this legend which I have read you exceedingly to heart?so much so that, although he would walk in his own grounds, nothing would induce him to go out upon the moor at night. Incredible as it may appear to you, Mr. Holmes, he was honestly convinced that a dreadful fate overhung his family, and certainly the records which he was able to give of his ancestors were not encouraging. The idea of some ghastly presence constantly haunted him, and on more than one occasion he has asked me whether I had on my medical journeys at night ever seen any strange creature or heard the baying of a hound. The latter question he put to me several times, and always with a voice which vibrated with excitement. - unforgettable in every way! A true classic to add to your collection!
